Citrefine Plantations Ltd (CPL) is a 5,700 hectare essential oil plantation in the middle of the picturesque Viphya Pine Forest in Northern Malawi.
We plant primarily Corymbria citriodora to produce a fragrant lemon essential oil, which is exported, refined and used in natural insect repellants such as Mosiguard Natural. It is sold worldwide and will soon be coming to Malawi. Our business creates valuable foreign exchange for Malawi and is one of the country’s investment success stories. We are now looking to plant several other oil producing species, from lemon grass and geraniums, to eucalypts.
Moreover, we have planted a sizeable area of other tree species and will be doing much more on this front through our official tree planting scheme, explained on our projects page.
Formally set up as a Malawian company in 2009, we have planted 680ha to date and have a fully operational distillation plant of two sets of two 2.5ton pots which means we can distil around 5 tons at any one time. We are the biggest essential oil operation in Malawi and one of the biggest in Central and Southern Africa.
